Five ideas to try this week
1. Make passing and catching your priority.
Does every player in your club catch with two hands?
Do they catch the ball and bring it down low? Or do they catch the ball and bring it up with a high release?
This needs to be the first expectation you set at training this week.
2. Set up your team bench: Whether it’s chairs at elite level or a long wooden bench on an outdoor court. I love to set up my team from GK, GD, WD, C, WA, GA, GS in a line at the quarter time breaks. This verses the old team huddle approach where I have always struggled to find players and get across what I need for the next quarter. I love to set up in a line where I can provide feedback as clearly and effectively as possible in the short amount of time we have. As players coming off the court, we can rest, hydrate and fuel without wasting time while we hear our next instructions from the coach.
3. Don’t feel guilty for enjoying a win: We’re actually neurologically wired to get a dopamine hit when we WIN and it feels good. I am all about being humble in victory, but I am BIG on celebrating commitment, hard work and deserving results.
4. Bring a junior up that has earns their spot: Rewarding and harnessing young talent is the future of your club. The key to make this a seamless process, is to have the parents approval and to communicate that the overall clubs needs are being met.
5. Know your players: This week at training, find out what each player enjoys most about the game, what they think they are good at and what they want to improve on.
I love hearing from you all, so please reach out with any questions.
